PARAPARAUMU NEWS.
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. The attendance at the Decemiber meeting of the Paraparaumu Institute was not so large as usual, the chief reasons for absence being that the dis l triet is in, the throes of haymaking, shearing and general rush .of work. Mrs Mackay presided. Mrs Kelso gave a humorous reading entitled "The' Banns of Marriage." Mrs M. Maclean gave instruction in the making of flax baskets, also of pine needles and raffia, which when finished were most dainty. Mrs Mackay proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Johnstone, and Mrs R. Maclean for making the splendid cake which when competed for materially added to the Institute funds on the birthday; this was heartily given. Mrs Hand (treasurer) was thanked for her services in training the junior members in singing and also (assisted by Miss Piggott) for teaching them folk dancing. The hostesses wee Mesadmes D. Sweetman, Lewis, Burgess, Matten, Mahoriey, and Miss Maclean, who were cordially thanke,d by vote. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. GUILD BAZAAR. The Methodist Ladies' Guild held their annual bazaar recently in the Anglican Hall at Paraparaumu. Miss Maclean (Guild President) who was in the chair, and Mrs Mackay, , who opened the bazaar, made short cheerful speeches. They received bouquets, Eunice Davies presenting one and Barbara Strand the other. Then followed a busy afternoon, the attendance being good. In the evening. a concert was held which was much enjoyed. The Misses Reeve received special thanks for their pianoforte duets, as' did also Mrs E. Hand and Mrs Douglas Howell, who sang. An amusing play was acted, entitled, "A House to Let," the players were Misses Potts, Burgess, Cromb, Lang and Watson, and John Killick, Junior. The stallholders were: —Produce: Mrs Wilson and Mr Harris. Drapery: Mrs ■Cromb, Mrs Hurren (treasurer) and Mrs Baucke (hon. see.) Novelties: Misses Potts and Baucke. Cakes: Mrs Watson and Mrs Potts. Drinks and Sweets: Mrs Harris, Mrs Bain and Miss Jean Cromib. Afternoon Tea: Mrs Hughes, Mrs J. Beckett and Miss Cromb. Side-shows: Rev. Wilson, Mr. Potts and Mr Tom Hughes. The day's receipts amounted to £2O. Miss Killick was thanked for her supervision and help in the decorative scheme, and presented with a beautiful bouquet.
