Urging increased consumption of Empire wines “The Times’’ in a leading article argues that growers should nor, attempt exact, emulation of French. Spanish and Portuguese products, yet should deserve comparison with the best of them. The old snobbery in being afraid to be found drinking Empire wine is not yet completely dead. Consumers’ education might be helped by solution of the names problem. ' “If we really can be offered Empire sherry fit to compete with Spanish, ought we not to find a name more beautiful than Amontillado Manzanilla, the very sound of which should brin'g raptures of memory and hope?” asks the writer.
