A GIFT TO GAR WOOD.

HARMSWORTHY TROPHY RETAINED. KATE’DON PULLS UP IN SECOND LAP. BTARBOARD ENGINE STOPPED BY POOLING OF PLUGS. <TBy Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) .* (Received This Day, 8.40 a.m.) ' DETROIT, Sept. 5. Another motor mishap disabled Miss ■England HI. to-day, permitting Gar ""Wood to retain the Harmsworth Tro--phy without even the shadow of a race. The fouling of spark plugs caused the stoppage of Kaye Don’s starboard -engine at the end of the first mile, producing such a strain on the other en:gine as to make continuation impossible, compelling the Englishman to withdraw from the race, and permitting -the American to cover the requisite Seven, laps of the 35-mile course at 69.036 miles per horns to win a hollow victory. The water was quiet this morning . and the conditions were ideal. Don, ! on the start, had a alighjt lead, and > as both boats roared to the turn t the English craft’s superiority seemed Indicated. As on Saturday, . however, Miss America X. went - into the lead on the (turn, and the ' spectators once more sensed that the English craft was in trouble. . Miss England slowed down in the second lap and idled in the swell as 3>ou and Garner worked frantically to make, repairs. Their efforts were clearly unavailing, and the crew signalled for a service boat, which went out and towed the craft in. Kaye Don, after the race, explained the engine failure and expressed his -•disappointment. He added, ‘ 1 Person•ally I want to come) again, but that depends on Lord "Wlakefield. ■” Gar Wood said, “I am happy to have won, but I sincerely regret Don’s breakdown. 'lt is fine to win, but I would have liked to race the full ■•course. Don and Lord "Wakefield have any sincere regrets,”
