DRASTIC ACTION IN AUSTRALIA Received Sunday, 9.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 4. The Federal Government, acting in conjunction with the State authorities, is taking drastic action to suppress Communist and similar illegal organisations in New South Wales ’ and Victoria. The owners of premises in Sydney and Melbourne where Communist activities are carried on have been served with official notices prohibiting the holding of meetings by those bodies. The penalty for disobedience is a fine of £IOO, in default imprisonment for six months. The State police’ have been directed to insist on the observance of the law. The Commonwealth Attorney-General (Mr. Latham) explains that since the Lyons Government took office 53 Communists have been deported.
