COUNTY RATE REDUCTIONS.

Aftc*; the estimates for the current year had been considered, and in some respects amended, at the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday, reductions were made in the general rate in , all four ridings—substantially so in Wirokino, • which, during the last financial year, converted a debit i balance of £607 into a credit of ; £3093. The new rates and the old are shown below: —

The hospital rate is also lower for the current year, being 3-16 d, as against 13-64 d. The rates of the various waterrace districts remain the same as last year. Comparison with the general average reveals the Horowhenua County in a very favourable light as in relation to most other counties. According to this Government Statistician fqr the financial year . 1929-30, the average rate per £IOOO of rateable capital value of the whole of the counties of the Dominion was £6.02; for Horowhenua County in that ylear it was £4.94. Last year, Horowhenua’s total worked out at £4.208 and this year, with the reductions made bn Saturday, the total average rate paid per £IOOO of capital value will be £3.84.
