OTAKI NEWS.

OTAKI, Fr i dVi y. Drs. Bakcwoll and Paterson were among the visitors to Otaki on Wednesday. A heavy frost was experienced in Otaki yesterday morning there bein<>no less than seven degrees and two this morning. An inspection of the Otaki fire siren, which failed to give the usual sound on Tuesday morning, disclosed the fact that parts were corroded. These were given the necessary attention and on Wednesday night a trial was made and proved quite satisfactory. The siren was heard for miles.

At last meeting of the Otaki Lodge of Druids a large number of visitors were present. D.P. Bro. Beckett installed the officers of Otaki Lodge. The Royal Arch Druid, who was present, stated that the members of the Wellington Royal Arch Chapter would visit Otaki on Saturday, Juno ISth, and that the Grand Secretary and Grand Treasurer would be among the visitors. The secretary stated that the Anglican Parish Hall had been engaged for the Ritual competition on July 20th. It was resolved to donate half a guinea 'to the free ambulance.

Air. J. Broad, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, left on transfer for Inglewood this morning, carrying with him the best wishes of many friends. During the week Air. Broad has been entertained by friends when general regret was expressed at his transfer from Otaki. All wished him a prosperous time and mementoes were given him as tokens of esteem. On each occasion Air. Broad suitably replied, stating that while in Otaki ho had made many friends, whom he regretted leaving behind.

Air. Robert Charles Smith, who died at Eangiuru on Thursday, was 72 years <of age, and was popularly known as Captain Smith as he had had considerable volunteer and regular service. He served in the Gordon Relief Expedition of 1884-85, and at the time of the Boer War started and organised the Raglan Alounted Rifles, of which he was captain. Ho volunteered for service in the Great War, and was appointed captain of the ATaori Contingent at Avondale in 1914, but was later (transferred to the Samoan relief force, rwhere he served for about two yeais, the larger part of which as O.C. the Garrison. On returning to New Zealand in December, 1916, he was appointed O.C. the musketery camp of Papawai, where he remained until the armistice.

A large gathering of parishioners and friends attended St. Alatthew’s Hall, Brooklyn, on the occasion of a parish welcome to the Rev. G. K. Moir, Mrs/ Aloir, and family, Air. Aloir having recently been appointed vicar of the parish as successor to the Rev. P. Houghton. Air. E. G. Fendall, people’s warden, presided, and on behalf of the parishioners gave the new vicar and his family a hearty welcome and trusted that their stay in Brooklyn would be both long and happy. Alinisters of the other local Baptist, Alethodist, and Presbyterian Churches and representatives of the Salvation Army were present, and all expressed their pleasure of meeting Air. and Airs. Aloir and wishing them success in their future work. The vicar in reply expressed his thanks for the warm welcome they had received, and said he looked forward with great hopes for the future. Community singing and songs by the choir occupied the remainder of the evening. The supper and decorative scheme were undertaken by members of the Ladies’ Guild. The induction of Air. Aloir as vicar of the parish by the Rev. Archdeacon Johnson will take place this evening.
