State Lotteries to Help Hospitals
PROPOSAL TURNED DOWN BY NARROW MARGIN WELLINGTON, Last Night. By the narrow margin of 24 votes to 21, the Conference of Hospital Boards rejected a proposal to establish State lotteries, the proceeds of which would go toward the upkeep of hospitals. The proposal, which was embodied in various forms in several remits, was subjected to a lengthy discussion. Hon. Mclntyre (Duller) said it was becoming more apparent every day that the introduction of art unions was desired by the people. It was a form of taxation which appealed to them, it was absolutely essential .that in .order to prevent, trouble, the Government should obtain this year, an additional £2,000,000. He pointed out that private art unions conducted in the past has ..returned to the State £IOO a day He was sure the whole of the Dominion would favour'fhd ‘lnauguration of State lotteries. They had to get away from this hypocrisy about immorality of art unions. Eev. Mr. Archer said that up to the present,, he had always assumed that members o|'',hpspital boards were a lot of serious men and women, concerned
with assisting their country and not with encouraging a torni ox vice from which New Zealand was suitering to* day. it was a disgiace i'oi delegates even to discuss the idea. Several other speakers spoke against the remit. -Mr. F. Castle (chairman ot the Wellington Board) said that a similar proposal had been placed before his board some time ago but had been rejected, and in his opinion, rightly so. The chairman (Air. Wallace) said they were treading on dangerous ground, it would be most unwise to imperil the system of assured finance which a board already had.
