SECRETARY BELIEVES SETTLEMENT WOULD RESULT. CO-OPERATIVE MINES ARB VERY BUSY. (By Telegraph—Press Association). GREYMOUTH, Friday. A conciliatory mood is general among the miners. Interviewed today, Mr W. Purdy, secretary of the West Coast Miners’ Council, stated that, if a conference eventuated he believed everything could be fixed to the (satisfaction of both parties. “A conference offers an opening for settlement,” he said. “Refusal to meet offers none. Every possibility of settlement should be tested and every avcnno explored. ’ ’ The position remains unchanged, only thoi safety |ineiin remaining at the mines. A total of 3500 tons of coal has been taken overland since the mines stopped, 1200 being from the bins at the mines out and the remainder from the co-operative enterprises. The steamer Kaimirc loaded 2000 tons. The position now is that,the mines out have only sufficient coal in the bins necessary for the use 1 of the boilers in the event ef a prolonged strike. The co-operative mines are working full time and some of the orders held by the mines out have been transferred to them.
