“THE COLONEL” BADLY BEATEN

McRUVIE AN DCURTIS TEN UP (Received This Day, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, June 7. A perfect windles day enabled amazing golf to be played, despite the expectation that Sandwich, which is the longest championship course, would tax the competitors’ hitting powers. The record was twice smashed. R. Witcomhe, in the first round, returned a score of 70, as compared with a bogey of 79. Half an hour later Eric Mcßuvle, aged 22, the Scottish amateur who won the Irish championship, returned a 69, which Don Curtis, the long-hit-ting Bournemouth professional, almost immediately equalled. Nevertheless Bradbeer, with a faultless 71, continued to lead.

Mcßuvie>s is regarded as a most impressive record-breaking performance. In soundness and accuracy he was almost perfection. He played straight down the middle from the tee and only required the iron for second shots. His loDigest putt was eight yards. Sarazen cays he has not seen a player of such promise at his age.
