FLOWER SHOW AT MANAKAU.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE STAGES A

BIG DISPLAY.

The first flower show held at Manakau took place yesterday in. the Town Hall under the auspices of the local (branch of the Women’s Institute. The organisers have every reason to be satisfied with the outcome of their .venture. Strong support was, of course, forthcoming from Manakau itself, where are located some of thefinest, private gardens on the coast as well .as many , very enthusiastic horticulturists, as is evidenced by their strong support of Levin and Otaki shows. . Entries also came from Tc Horo, Waikanae, Otaki and Levin, .with the result that close on 500 exhibits, divided between the following •sections, constituted a display whica faxed the capacity of the hall:— Cut Bio onus, Open, Section 5 Cut Blooms, Amateurs .. 65 Decorative 20 Vegetables 10 Domestic 103 Needlework . - 108 'Children’s Section .... 55 School Work 48 Total ;• •• 483 Characteristic of a Women’s Institute function, the show was especially strong in handicrafts, the cooking and needlework sections bringing forth as

many as thirty entries in some individual classes. Cut blooms showed both quality and numerical strength and the display of vegetables was particularly fine. An excellent showing of school work by the Manakau children, in addition to the competitive classes, attracted much admiration. A trade exhibit by Messrs Evans and Sawyer was distinguished 'by some magnificent trusses of delphinium, the vresult of long specialised hybridisation carried out by the firm, and presenting new characteristics both in form and colour. The Show was well patronised both in the afternoon, and evening, over £lO being taken at the doors. In the evening a concert programme added a variety of entertainment to the pleasure 0/ inspecting the .splendid exhibits. At an interval, Mr Les. Atkins expressed the sincere thanks of the ladies for the support accorded their venture, and acknowledged the services of the judges and the generosity ot the donors of special prizes. • The Avork of organising the slioav was carried out by the Manakau branch of the Women’s Institute, and in this connection acknoAvledgment should be made of the groat assistance given by the Manakau Progressive Association. Both bodies can be well satisfied with the result of their effort, both from the fund-raising point of view and as giA 7 ing pleasure to the large number of people Avho visited the show during the day.
