WESLEY TENNIS CLUB’S FETE.

SUCCESSFULLY HELD IN CENTURY HALL.

On account of the being rough on Saturday afternoon, the Wesley Tennis Club’s effort which was to have taken the form of a garden fete, on the grounds adjoining the club’s courts, was transferred to the Century Hall. The function had been well organised, and consequently the amount of public interest that had been aroused ensured a satisfactory attendance notwithstanding the climatic conditions. The various ’stalls, somewhat hurriedly 6et up under the circumstances, were nevertheless quite effective, and excellent business was done, the plenteous stocks being cleared by the close of the afternoon. The various departments and 1 those in charge of them were as under; — Cake Stall —Misses G. Collier and D. Plumridge. Sweets Stall. —Misses D. Parsons, F. Walker and S. Raskin.

Ice Cream and Soft Drinks. —Misses M. Ransom, C. Parker. Produce Stall —Messrs J. Astridge, W. Parker, F. Swanwiek and E. Ransom.

Afternoon Tea —Misses D. Dempsey, D. Stedman, N. Thompson, and Mrs S. Parsftns. ' • The sponge sandwich competitions held in conjunction with the fete were judged by Mrs J. Whitaker, whose duty was no easy one, the numerous entries showing keen if friendly rivalry. The awards were as under:— Butter sponge: Mrs H. J. Lancaster 1, Mrs P. J. Moxham 2. Sponge without butter: Mr L. King I, Mrs Kennerley 2. The winners very generously gave their prizes back to the club. Owing to the change of venues the contemplated games were not held, but the feature known as the mystery tent was retained, and it provided much, amusement. The takings for the afternoon were gratifying to the club, whose funds will be substantially helped thereby. The thanks of the club are extended to all who assisted this object by their patronage of the fete.
