Jap. Plane Shot Down.
CHINESE AIR REINFORCEMENTS. San Francisco Press Broadcast. SHANGHAI, Feb. 5. Artillery shells from the battle of Chapei were reported to have fallen within residential areas patrolled by United States marines in the south-west part of Shanghai to-day. Marine headquarters said the shelling was terrorising the inhabitants of those areas. They said they were unable to determine whether the shells were from Japanese or from Chinese guns. Chinese guns shot down a Japanese airplane over Chapel* to-day. The ’plane burned when it fell. It was the first disaster for Japanese flyers in the battle thus far. Another Japanese ’plane and a Chinese ’plane were reported to have been shot down when Chinese flyers drove off Japanese airmen attempting to bomb Hungjao, Chinese airdrome west of Shanghai, to-day. Chinese airplanes, reported to have engaged six Japanese bombing ’planes, were supposed to have arrived from Nanking. Dispatches from that city said two squadrons of Chinese ■planes, comprising eighteen machines, had left for Shanghai.
