Smashing the Atom With 85-ton Magnet
AMERICAN SCIENTISTS’ EFFORTS. San Francisco Press Broadcast. BERKELEY, Calif, Jan. 26. With the recent installation of one of the. largest magnets in the world in their laboratory, two University of California scienists are setting about their task of trying to break up the atom and release its terrific energy. The magnet, weighing 85 tons, was one of four built for globegirdling radio communication during the war. Working only with a two-ton magnet, the scientists, Professors Edward Lawrence and Stanley Livingston, say they nave been able to penetrate the outer husk of the atom. With the greater magnet they hope to shatter the atom completely with an ultimate 25,000,000 volts impact. What wonders will result if they are successful, not even they can foretell.
