OTAKI NEWS.

A monster cabbage measuring 4f - Gin across may uow be seen on Air. Jeimens’s property, Tasman Beach. There are still quite a number of holiday visitors in Otaki. The beaches are proving very popular with a large number. A sacred concert will be given in Otaki early in February in aid of the relief funds. The party will be wellknown Wellington artists and while in Otaki wdll also give an entertainment at the Sanatorium and render solos at various churches.

The rainfall at Otalci golf links during- December -.was 3.47 inches. Rain fell on nine days. The total for the year was 37.43 inches, with' 151 days of rain. This is nineteen inches short of the average for, the past live years. At Te Horo for the year rain fell on 166 days with a total fall of 48.59 inches.

A large number of unemployed men gathered in Otaki this morning, declining, 'to work unless wages were raised from 9s to 12s 6d. As there is not sufficient money in hand to meet the request the position is a very awkward one. For the greater portion of the morning some sixty to seventy men waited outside the Borough offices trusting that their requests would be acceded to. It is understood that a temporary arrangement has been arrived at.

According to a report of a produce -sale held in Wellington in January of 1882, fifty years ago, it was impossible .to get an offer for fresh butter. Eggs realised 10£d to lid per dozen. Onions and potatoes failed to extract a bid. Mr. P. C. Watt, the w'ell-know-n contractor of Wellington, is at present on holiday in Otaki. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Jackson, of Masterton, are in Otaki on holiday. Mr. .Jackson was for some time Mayor of Masterton.

The death occurred at Foxton this morning of Mrs. Kereopa McGregor, a well-knowm Native who had many friends in this district. The funeral will take place at Otaki on Wednesday.
