SHANNON NEWS.

i (From "The Shannon News.") At a meeting of parents, held in- the Moutoa Hall on Thursday last it was resolved to oppose any attempt _to curtail the present facilities for children to obtain secondary education. The usual weekly euchre tourney conducted by the Lalbour Party was held last evening, about forty players taking part. The prizes for most games >won were awarded as follows: —Mr T. Ingley 1, Mr Beck 2, Mrs Caldwell 3. An alarming experience befel Miss A. Brown, late of Shannon, who is in the employ of Mr D. P. Scarfe, draper, Eaetihi. While she was burning some rublbish on Tuesday, it suddenly blazed up. She was enveloped in the 'flabes, but the prompt action of Mr G. Anderson, jun., in putting a sack over the young lady's head and extinguishing them, averted what might •have been a serious accident.

The social and dance conducted by the Mangaore Social : Club at Mangaore on -Wednesday evening, was well attended, a .good number of visitors being present. The evening was devoted to dancing, vocal and musical items, everyone enjoying'themselves. A Monte Carlo competition- was won by Mr G. Cnven and Miss J. Brown, the winners of the Spot Waltz being Mr and Miss M. Coates. During the evening Misses V. Aim, M. Davies, J. Blackwood and Mr I. Hemmingsen rendered vocal and musical items all of which were much appreciated. Mr B. Ventry-Smith capably carried out the duties of M.C., Mr and Mrs; Parcell supplying the music. A dainty supper was served by the ladies.

The fortnightly card tourneys conducted 'by the Shannon Croquet Club \ during the past few months, which have proved so successful and enjoyable, were brought to a close on Tues--day afternoon, there Ibeing a large attendance of players. The prize winners for the most games won during 'the afternoon were Mesdames Butters and McLaggan. The prizes for the highest number of points scored during .the season were as follows: —Croquet players only, Mrs T. Ingley; general public, Mrs J. Hennescsey. Before closing, Mrs Brann, on [behalf of the . Croquet Club, extended an invitation to all present to 'join members of the club at afternoon tea on the occasion •of the'opening of the croquet season to-morrow afternoon. Tea hostesses "were Mesdames Ingley and Picard.
