Italian Banker Gaoled for Year
ECHO OF HATRY SCANDALS Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. MILAN, June 14. After a week’s trial on charges of: fraud, conspiracy and forgery John Gialdini, the Italian banker, who was a member of the Hatry syndicate which, was convicted of gigantic swindling in London early in 1930, was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment. He alleged that the Hatryites swindled him of £60,000. A deposition by Hatry stated that Gialdini was conversant with all the affairs of the group, and added: “we have no animus against him and I should hate to think he was going to share my fate.” Gialdini was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment but many months already spent in gaol will be deducted from the sentence. He was ordered to pay damages to an unspecified amount to Sir Gilbert Garnsey, representing the Hatry Companies’ estate which was sequestrated at the time of the arrest. Gialdini is appealing.
