Going Somewhere—But Where?
BERT HINKLER IN CANADA. Received Thursday, 7. p.m. TORONTO, April 29. Bert Hinkler, the noted Australian airman, is at the airport here. There is much conjuncture as to his immediate plans. In the course of an interview he would not deny that he was going somewhere, but refused to discuss the matter of his flight. It is believed, however, that he has decided to fly to South America, thence across the South Atlantic or to fly to Australia via Vancouver. A North Atlantic hop via the northern route is also suggested as a possibility. SOUTHERN CROSS ARRIVES AT SINGAPORE. Received Thursday, 9.50 p.m. SINGAPORE, April 30. The Southern Cross with the air mail arrived at 11.45 a.m. Will Finish Journey by Boat Received Thursday, 9.50 p.m, DARWIN, April 30. The aviators Fairbairn and Shenstone have decided to quit Darwin by boat. Their aeroplane was so severely strained on the beach after its arrival from England that it was unable to rise. The aeroplane will also leave by boat. Westralian Plane to Replace City of Cairo Received Thursday, 11.0 p.m. PERTH, April 30. Imperial Airways, Ltd., has purchased a de Haviland Hercules air liner from West Australian Airways, Ltd., to replace the City of Cairo, which was forced down recently at Koepang. Delivery will be taken by the pilots of the City of Carlo, now en route to Fremantle on the steamer Koolinda. No Subsidy for Air Mail Received Thursday, Midnight. CANBERRA, Apr# 30. Answering a question the Prime Minister said an application had been made by Imperial Airways Limited, also the Dutcn Airmail Company for a mail subsidy between England and Australia. “I replied that there was very little prospect of such a subsidy being granted." SINGAPORE, April 30. Kingsford Smith told an interviewer that he knew nothing about a proposed airmail between Calcutta and'Australia conducted' by his company, Australian National Airways Limited. "I wish it were true. The Darwin-Singapore route would be preferable but it is' quite impossible without a subsidy.''
