WHAKATANE CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. A large number of members were present at the annual meeting of the Whakatane Club, which took place in the Club-room on Wednesday evening, when the retiring President (Mr F. H. Hudson) took the chair. The annual report and the balancesheet, which showed that the year began with a credit balance of £7 10s and ended with one of £lO 13s were read and adopted. The report was as follows: — “On the Bth May the Club opened with a membership ,o# 34 senior and 21 juniors, and was run under the same lines as in the previous years, by means of a syllabus drawn up by the members of the committee. Much interest was taken in the gymnasium class, and the members are much indebted to their leaders, Miss Parsons and Mr Sims. On two different occasions we were fortunate enough to obtain such lecturers as Dr. L. J. Hunter and Mr C. H. Bould, and our thanks are due to these gentlemen for their most interesting lectures. The Club’s annual sale of work was held on the 17th September, when £lB 16s 7d was realised, £6 of which was donated to the Wesley Tennis Club for improvements on the Courts. A banquet was held on the 3rd October, to which the Patron, President, and Vice-Presidents were invited. On the 22nd and 23rd of October, the Ladies Guild held a bazaar, the portion of the programme on the first evening of this function being given by the Senior girls of the club. Thanks ar e due to Mrs Higson, for the excellent service she has rendered to the Club, through the letting of the rooms.”
In commenting on the report, the Chairman said that the club had had a very successful year, and in view of that fact, taken with the good attendance on the present occasion, the outlook was bright for the coming season. On the gymnastic side, the men had had a very satisfactory class under Mr 0. Sims. That gentleman had proved himself a worthy leader and instructor, and the speaker was pleased to see Mr Sims at this meeting and hoped that he would carry on with the good work in the ensuing year. The lectures by Dr. Hunter and' Mr Bould had been very instructive, and it was pleasing to know that the club was able to bring such well informed speakers to the aid of the educational part of its activities. It was gratifying that the club had recognised the worthiness of th e Mayoress’s Christmas Belief Fund and the Earthquake Fund, having donated a guinea to each. Mr Hudson did not seek re-election as president, as he considered that the office should go around. He thanked the members for the loyal support they had given him, and. acknowledged the success they had made of the club. Whatever he had done for them had been with pleasure. Mr Hudson expressed appreciation of the services of the chaperones, whom he characterised as worthy representatives of the club.
Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: —Patron, Mr P. W. Goldsmith (re-elected); president, Mr A. Ransom; vice-presidents, Rev. W. G, Slade, Messrs W. Watkins, F. H. Hudson and J. W. Gibson; secretary and treasurer, Miss M Ransom (reelected); committee, Misses F. Walker, D. Parsons, and G. Collier,- Messrs C. Wilkinson and S. Parsons; chaperones, Mr and Mrs Ransom; gymnasium instructor, Mr C. Sims. The appointment of an instructor for the ladies’ class was held over for the committee to arrange. The subscriptions were fixed at the same figures as in the previous year: Seniors ss, juniors 2s 6d.
