A COMING-OF-AGE PARTY.

The members of the Whakatane Club on Friday evening, tendered a surprise party to Miss F. Walker, in the Weraroa Hall, on the occasion of her 21st birthday. ‘ The attendance was between 50 and 60, including friends who were the guests of the club; and a very sociable tine was spent. The hall had been prettily decorated by the club in their colours of blue and gold. Games, competitions and dancing caused the time to pass all too quickly. The winners in the novelty dances were Miss P. Meyers and Mr N. Watkins, Miss M. Hansom and Mr F. Swanwick. Competitions were won by Miss A. Plaster and Miss P. Meyers. Th e dance music was played by the Alhambrian Trio, consisting of Messrs H. Barnett (saxophone), H. Varnham (piano) and H. Fox (drums), and pianoforte extras were provided by Mr H. Williams and Mr S. Parsons. Mr W. Duguid Contributed a song, which was well received. An attractive supper was laid out, to which full justice was done. During an interval, Mr J. Roberts, on behalf of the Whakatane Club, presented the guest of honour with a handsome brassware fruit dish. • In doing so, he expressed to the recipient the club's greetings and wished her all happiness om having attained her majority. Miss Walker's health was drunk with musical honours, and she suitably acknowledged the gift and the compliments accompanying it. The popular young lady was also given an enormous key, on which were inscribed the names of all present. This presentation was made by Mr A. Hume, who hoped that she would long be able to keep it as a memento of the occasion. An interesting feature was the announcement, made during the supper interval, of the engagement of Miss Florence Walker to Mr E, S. W. Parsons, of Kent Street, Levin. Several further toasts were honoured, and dancing was resumed till about midnight, when the revels were brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne."
