SHANNON NEWS.

Mr P. Buckman has found it necessary to enter the Palmerston North Hospital for medical treatment. Mr Sherlock, of Devonport, Auckland, has been appointed to succeed Mr H. C. Jones as postmaster at Shannon. His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. -Butt), who is suffering from the effects of a poisoned hand, was reported to be much better yesterday. A record number of returned soldiers were present at the Anzac Day service held at Shannon on Saturday, there being an attendance of 24, three of whoin were South African veterans.

The girl friends of Miss Bowler, whose wedding to Mr McKenzie takes place this week, arranged a jolly , gift evening for her last Thursday, The hall was made bright with multi-col-oured streamers, and over 100 people came to honour their guest. The time was spent in dancing, Mr T. Laing acting as M.C., and Messrs Oliver (Palmerston North), Cottle, Gibbons and Miss Ward supplying the music. A dainty home-mado supper was handed round, then Mr Broadbelt, on behalf of her many friends, wished her all success in their life to come and asked her to open the parcels. Mr McKenzie replied on behalf of his fiancee and thanked all very much indeed.

The “Whoopee’’ dance held in the Parish Hall on Thursday evening by the committee of the Ladies ’ Guild of Yen. Bede’s Church, drew a large attendance, who spent a pleasant evening. The hall had been decorated with bright streamers to form a canopy and greenery for the occasion. The everpopular Alhambrian orchestra supplied the music, Mr D. Richards acting at M.C. The proceeds of the dance were for the hall alteration fund and the committee wishes to thank all those who so kindly supplied the supper, which added to the success' of the evening. Two competition dances were held, the spot waltz being won by Mr O’Donnell and Miss Devonshire, while Mr Houlihan and Miss Trotter won the Monte Carlo. The floor was excellent for dancing, the young people being responsible for this.

The late Mrs Mary McKenzie, of East Road, Shannon, who passed away suddenly on Tuesday # evening, had resided in the district for the past thirty-two years, bue was the eldest daughter of A£rs 8., Crowther, of Shannon, having been born in Fatherston in 1878, v She had always enjoyed good health and at the time of the seizure) which ended’ so tragically, was engaged in collecting some clothes off the line. Her death came as a great shock to her family and friends. Her husband predeceased her in 1916. She leaves to mourn her loss three sons,

Messrs W. A. McKenzie (Miramar) , R. H. McKenzie (Shannon) and J. A. McKenzie (Western Australia), also four daughters Edith, Ellen, Annie and Florence, all of Shannon. Tne interment took place at the Shannon cemetery on Friday and the high esteem in which the deceased lady was held was shown by the large number of residents and others who paid their last respects and the numerous floral emblems which covered the casket. The Rev. Mr Williamson conducted the service at the Presbyterian Church and later at the graveside.
