A London cable announces the death of Et. Hon. Sir Edward Clarke, K.C., the noted barrister,. aged 89. Deceased was prominent as counsel in the Baccarat case in 1891 and the Jameson case in 1896. He was M.P. for Southwark in 1880 and later for the City of London, and Plymouth. He was Solicitor-General from 18S6-92.
Mr J. H. Howell, director of the Wellington Technical College, has resigned, giving as his reason that he. thought the time had come to make way for a younger man. At a meeting of the Board of Governors last night he refused to reconsider his decision. For 25 years he has been a director of technical education, in his earlier years at Christchurch, and later at Wellington.
A pleasant function took place at the residence of Mrs R. L. Horn, jun., on Friday afternoon, when a kitchen tea was given, by the ladies of Kuku to Miss Esme Hogg, daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Hogg, in view of her marriage, which takes place this evening. About fifty people were present, and a dainty afternoon tea was served on the veranda and in the grounds. The bride-to-be was the recipient of a collection of nice and useful gifts, which she suitably acknowledged. Competitions held during the afternoon were won by Mrs Clyde Saint and Miss Marjorie Hogg.
