COST OF COUNTY VALUATION.

DEPUTATION TO THE DEPARTMENTAL HEAD. PROCESS MAY HAVE BEEN MORE THOROUGH THAN BEPORE. The chairman (Mr. Monk) reported to the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday that, acting under the Council’s instructions the County Clerk (Mr. Hudson) and himself had called on the Valuer-General in reference to his account of £7OO for the revaluation of the County. They asked him how that amount was arrived at, and ho replied that that was the Council’s share of the cost as it had been submitted to him. The total cost was £2IOO, which was levied in the proportions of one-third on the local body, one-third on the Taxation Department, and one-third on the Valuation Department. The deputation also took up with the Valuer-General the question of what amount had been charged to other local bodied in the district, such as the Drainage Boards. He replied that the Council being the parent body, had to bear the whole cost; had those other bodies not existed, the valuation would still have had to be made; where any increased cost had been incurred on account of their existence, it had been charged to them. The ValuerGeneral had been unable to tell the deputation why the cost was so much more this year than nine or ten years ago, except to say that the valuation may have been done a little better tnis time.
