PIG GRADING CONTINUES.
♦ PRICES UP FROM TO-DAY. A rumour which gained currency last week, that the system of pig grading established by the Pig Breeders’ Association and bacon companies in the Manawatu had been abandoned by the majority of factories until legislation shall make it compulsory, is denied by the hon. secretary of the N.Z. Association of Bacon Curers, Mr Hauseman, At a meeting held on February 4th to consider the necessity of standardising grading, it was unanimously decided that grading should be continued under the following conditions: — (1) That the length of the side of a pig should be no less than 28in. from the H-bone to the first rib on the 150 lbs. pig, lessening to 25in. on the 125 lbs. pig; (2) that for the first-grade pig the maximum back fat be not over Igins. at the shoulder on the 1501bs. pig, and decreasing with the weight of the pig. It is understood that further to show its bona tides the Curers ’ Association has decided to pay per lb. for first-grade pigs and 3fd per ; b. for second-grade pigs for this week’s buying. It is hoped this price will be maintained.
