The annual report of Lloyds Register of Shipping emphasises the large proportion of tanker tonnage built and continued demand for motor-ships. During the twelve months ended June 30th, plans for 601 vessels totalling over two •million tons, were approved—the highest total since the record year, 1920. 'Britain was followed by Japan in the ■lead in new constructions. The total tonnage of merchantmen afloat at the end of June, 1930; amounted to 32£ million —an increase of nearly a million ras compared with the previous • highest total, which was reached in June, ;1929.
