SPORTING NOTES.

A. D. Webster, who makes frequent visits to Australia and who rarely returns to the Dominion without winning his fair share of races, won his first race this visit when Bayacre. narrowly won the first division of the Three-year-old Handicap at Canterbury. Tippo did not spoil his excellent record and has yet to finish out of a place. On the other hand, Sweet Valais, who was a warm favourite, was not favour'•ab|fr drawn and did not commence nearly as well as Bayacre, However, in a furlong she ran into second place.

Whereas Sweet Valais had to be ridden hard to get a position early in the race, Bayacre w r as bowling along with, his mouth open. At the entrance of the straight Sweet Valais got on terms with Bayacre and below the distance actually headed the New Zealander, but the effort told on the Valais filly and Bayacre was doing better over the last twenty yards and won cleverly.
