LEVIN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Levip District High School Committee was held on Monday evening, when there ■were present: Mr F. G. Roe (chairman, Mrs Hosie, Miss Bowen, Messrs J. W. Procter, W. Balloon, D. ,J. Thomson, H. G. Kerslakc, and the headmaster. CORRESPONDENCE.

The Education Board advised that monthly capitation for March had been forwarded, amounting to £2O 8s 9d, an increase of 10s per month upon the amount received last year.

The Board also advised that a subsidy of £ls 15s 9d had been approved for library books. The Board wrote stating that the Education Department had approved of the appointment of an additional assistant to the secondary department and Miss D. Pillar, M.A., would report for duty on February 24th. With regard to the Committee’s application for a subsidy towards the construction of a cricket pitch, sand pit, and three tennis courts, the Board pointed out that the rate of subsidy for tennis courts was 10s in the £l, and not £1 for £l, so that there would be less available for the work than was anticipated. The application would have the Board’s early attention. SCHOOL PICNIC FINANCE. The chairman presented a balancesheet of the recent school excursion to Plimmerton. It was as follows: Receipts.—Credit balance 1929, £7; fete organised by the staff, £53; sale of railway, tickets £9O 3s 3d; stall rights 12/6; total £l5O 15s 9d. Expenditure.—Paid to Railway Department for special train £127 13s 8d; pavilion and service at Plimmerton, £8; tea, sugar, etc., £1 1 8 9d; fruit £3 4s; soft drinks, £4 2s 6d; advertising, rS IB/-; sundries 5s 3d; total £145 5s 2d! There was thus a credit of £5 10s 7d to carry forward to next year. The chairman said the picnic had been a very popular one. The number of children and adults who travelled by train from Levin was nearly 1100, and with those who came from Wellington and travelled by car there must have been 1200 people present. For so large a gathering it was remarkable how smoothly the arrangements worked. He thought that next year whoever had the organisation of the excursion should endeavour to make better terms with the Railway Department. It- appeared as though the Department -was running its Sunday trains at a considerably lower cost than the school excursions and next year ’ s committee should look into this aspect. On the chairman’s motion hearty votes of thanks were passed to the Board, Messrs Aitken, Maclean and Stannard, for selling tickets; Mr L. Moffatt and Mrs Staples for donations of sweets; and Mr L. Carmichael, who had kindly motored a boy to the doctor at Porirua to have a fisliffiook extracted from his hand. The thanks of the Committee were also accorded the Picnic Committee for their work.

INADEQUATE CAPITATION. The Wellington Federation of Educational Associations wrote inviting the Committee to attend a meeting at Wellington on March 19th to discuss with local members of Parliament the question of capitation grants' to school committees. The Federation also forwarded a questionnaire regarding accommodation, sanitation, heating and staffing, the object being to collect data from which will be compiled definite information to be placed before householders at the annual meetings. The Committees were unanimously of the opinion that the capitation allowed was inadequate to meet necessary expenses. Every effort should be made to secure this year a long overdue increase in capitation. It was decided to supply the information required and to support the Federation in its efforts. The opinion was expressed, however, that Levin was not so much.,interested in the Wellington members of Parliament, but should seek to bring the matter before district M. ’sP. ■HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The Headmaster (Mr R. J. Foss) re,ported as follows for the month: The school has maintained an average attendance of 95 per cent, in both secondary and Primary divisions during the past month., The secondary classes have now settled down to work and have been organised into five main divisions, the Board having appointed Miss D. Pillar, M.A., in a relieving capacity pending a permanent appointment being advertised. Miss K Dillon, a relieving assistant from Shannon, has received a permanent appointment elsewhere, and Miss Lilias Smith has taken up relieving duties to-day. The school has recently been visited by the Science Supervisor, Mr. 11. WynneITesso. The Physical Instruction Officer will attend on Wednesday and Thursday next. I note wit!) pleasure the formation of a Home and Schorl ’Association, the promoters of which are deserving of the thanks .of the School for their efforts to- promote its welfare. The Swimming Sports recently hold proved a popular and successful function. GENERAL. It was decided to call tenders for the supply of 15 cords of firewood in five-cord lots, to be delivered at the school in 4-foot lengths, stacked and jthon cut into one-foot lengths. Accounts totalling £7 2s 8d were passed for payment.
