HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
SOUTHERN DISTRICT MATTERS. The following business relating to the southern portion of the district was dealt with at the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday:— Pilling at WAimeha Township. Permission was' sought by Mr. Joseph Whittle, of Palmerston North, owner of a house at Waikanae Beach, to Jill up a small depression -in front of section 97, Waimeha Township. He stated that the section was high and the side of the road low. He would not of the road. ' The chairman stated that he had advised Mr. Whittle, who had approached him on the matter, to write to the Council. There would-be no detriment to the County in the proposed work. On the motion of the chairman the request was granted; the work to bo
done to the satisfaction of the engineer. Waikanae pencil Xtoad. A copy was received irom me Undersecretary of the Public Works .Department of an Order-in-Councli exempting two chains on the southern side oi tlio Waikanae Beach Load, about a mile from the railway, from |Uie uvovi.-ions of Section ITS of the Public 'Works Act,. Waiolianga Bridge Loan. The Local Government Loans Board:, forwarded sanction to the raising of the Waiolianga bridge loan of LI3OO. This refers to the new Lame bridge to bo erected in t,ao Otakl Uiog". Tho conditions provide that - the u” , m oi; the loan shall not exceed yea r~ and the interest not exceed oi ptr cent., and that provision ahall -be made, for a sinking fund of not less titan mvec per cent; no portion of 'die ii) Wrest or sinking fund to be paid ’out < f loam money.
. On the motion of "the chairman seconded by' Or. Colquhoim, it, was‘ resolved that the communication bo received, and that arrangements for the takingof a poll bo left in the hands of the County Clerk. The chairman stated that it wasproposed to take the poll on April 10th. Mangaone Eoad Upkeep. Mr. W. Baxter, sawmilior, Rihioraugi, forwarded an account for £lu for maintenance which he had carried out on the Mangaone Hoad from hismill to Monk's cutting from September, 1927, to March, 1929. He stated that he had spent over £2OO in keeping the road in repair, and that tho chairman had informed him that ho would be paid for it. Tho chairman said he- had never made any such statement, officially orotherwise. This could bo borne out by Cr. Jensen and the engineer. He had made Mr. Baxter a definite offer, which he did not accept until abdi'U 1 nildwaythrough last year. The chairman • assumed that no payment could lie made till the acceptance of that offer,-wliicln was £lO per annum. He moved • thaij the account bo not recognised. Cr.
