LEVIN FIRE POLICE.
ANNUAL SWEARING-IN CERE-
MONY.
The annual ceremony of swearingin the Levin Fire Police took place last evening, in the Board-room at the Fire Station. There were present: Captain W. B. Macintosh, Lieut. J. Ingram, Fire-constables J. Inee, J. W. J. Jacob, R. E. Henderson, A. R. Tantrum, and W. Smaill (secretary), also the Mayor of Levin (Mr C. Blenkhorn) and the Chairman of the Fire Board (Mr F. E. Parker). Leave of absence was granted to Lieut. W. G. Clark, Fire-constable's H. Walkley, A. H. Mac lean, A. Dempsey and F. W. Pink." The statutory affidavit was signed by tho members present and the oath was administered by the Mayor, each of the signatories pledging himself to act as a member for one year, to faithfully carry out tho duties imposed on him" by the Fire Brigades Act and any by-laws and regulations of the Fire Board, and to faithfully execute any instructions lawfully given to him pursuant ‘to the provisions of the Act. The Captain, who presided, thanked the Mayor for his presence and for having sworn the members in. They felt highly honoured, he said, to have tho Chief Magistrate with them on this occasion. Captain Macintosh heartily welcomed the Chairman of the Fi.e Board, stating that his attendance was also appreciated by the members. With regard to tho Mayor, it was one of his privileges to execute little offices such ns tho one he had performed that evening. As for the Fire Police, they would do their best to carry out the duties that were incumbent on them. His Worship congratulated the Corps on so freely and voluntarily coming forward for the work they had under-taken—-duties which, lat times, were none too pleasant. It showed a spirit of citizenship which he very much appreciated. Ho was very well assured that, if the occasion arose, their services would be performed efficiently and well. Mr Parker, in returning thanks for the welcome extended to him, said that the Board really saw too little of tho Fire Police. At least once a year the Corps should meet the Board in proper session. The work of the Fire Police was silent, and, although the Board did not like unnecessary parade, it recognised that the members of this Corps were drawn from various parts of the
town so as to bo representative and in order that some (of them would be handy to any outbreak of fire. The Board knew that when the call came they would be ready; it had great faith in the Brigade and the Fire Police, and he was sure that those organisations would capably take charge of whatever work fell to them. The function closed with the captain expressing his appreciation of tho remarks made by the Mayor and Mr Parker.
