HIGH SCHOOL FETE.

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION IN AID OF PICNIC FUND. The grounds of the Levin District High School presented n gay and animated appearance on Saturday afternoon, when a fete was held in aid of the wherewithal to provide for the pupils' annual excursion to Plimmerton. Appeals on behalf of this large educational institution always meet with a ready response from parents and the public generally, and thus it was that at the fete there was an- abundance of goods of various kinds foxsale and a very satisfactory attendance. Besides half a dozen stalls, which offered an attractive variety of wares, the function had some of the features of an old-time fair, in its competitions and side-shows. Much interest was added to the proceedings by a programme in which the trained talent of different bands of pupils was displayed, in such directions as folkdancing, physical drill and organised

games. The credit for the successful running of the affair goes to the teaching staff and their numerous young helpers. The names given in the list beloAv are those of. the principals, their assistants being legion. Tea-rooms.—Misses Milnes and Bill and Mrs MeLeavey.

Chipper, The hums in front of the main and secondary school buildings provided the setting for the stalls, all of which were prettily decorated; these Avoro on the left side of the path leading towards the secondary school, Avliile on the larger laAvn on the right Avere the various games and the side-shoAvs. The organisers and the patrons Avere very fortunate in the Avcather that they experienced, as the rain held off all the afternoon. The school buildings sheltered the fete from the Avesterly wind, and the proceedings Avere conducted in. quite suitable conditions. It almost goes Avilhout saying that the demonstrations by the children Avere greatly admired. ' A specially fine display Avas given Avith the Maypole by girls from a number of classes, who had been trained by Miss Clarke. The infant games by* the little pupils from Miss Hitchcock’s department Avere quite charming and gave the spectators a good insight into the rationale of kindergarten. Folk dances wore nicely carried out by girls of .Miss Milnes’s and Miss I'engelly’s classes, from the secondary school; and neat exhibitions of physical drill Avere given by boys under " .Mr Thomas (secondary department), Mr Chipper (Standard HI), and Mr H.
