VITAL PHASE OF EDUCATION. MINISTER INSISTS ON DIGNIFIED BUILDINGS, WELLINGTON, Last Night. In speaking at the Technical Education Conference to-day, the Minister of Education, in reference to some remarks about the delay in connection with the new education policy, said that a select committee had been set up, and in the near future an educational representative would bo hoard before it. Ho denied that there had been undue delay. The technical school teachers in May had made recommendations much along the lines he had been referring to. Mo stressed the importance of technical training which was necessary in any complete system of education. It did not matter whether a man was going to bo a lawyer or a minister of religion, he should have ids hand and eye trained. The sooner we looked upon technical education as being a vital phase of education the better it would bo r'or New Zealand. Education in the past had not been sufficiently practical. He would like to see such schools as the agricultural schools at Feilding ami Rangiora multiplied. He assured them that whatever changes were made the delegates could rely that nothing would be brought into being that would undermine the work of technical school teachers and managers. Ho stressed the need for unification all matters pertaining to education, but said that hisremarks must not be taken as an attack on the board system in which he believed.

In referring to buildings, the Minister said that recently he had plans rejected for a technical school because they appeared more like Trentham hutments or a factory He did want a dignified appearance for the training places of the citizens of Now Zealand and that would not mean in many cases a tremendous addition to the costs. “I am not prepared to allow buildings to be put. up in my term that will be i disgrace to New Zealand and to the people attached to education to-day.
