NGAITAHU TRIBE'S 80-YEAR CLAIM.
HOUSE WILL BE ASKED TO APPROPRIATE £500,000 PRIME MINISTER’S MOVE. DUNEDIN, Last. Night. At the Native Land Court tin? morning, Mr Tuiti Makitanara, the Southern Maori M'.P., when dealing with the Ngaitahn tribe claim, which has been the subject of litigation for 80 years, stated that, notwithstanding the Royal Commission’s recommendation that £i5r)4,000 be paid to tin* tribal beneficiaries in compensation for the sale of the Canterbury Province, no Parliament had put this recommendation into force, but now, as the result of strong recommendations by the Native Minister, the Prime Minister had expressed his intention to ask Parliament to appropriate £1500,000 as compensation. In a further statement, the member said that proposals were afoot to erect at a cost of £OOO, probably in Dunedin, a huge carved Maori house.
