OTAKI OPIUM SMOKERS.

LOCAL CHINESE IN TROUBLE. TINES TOTAL £3B.

Constable Satherley staled in evidence at tlio Otaki Court yesterday that he suspected ioc.al Chinese? in Rangiuru Road of opium smoking and in consequence, in company with Constable Carran, visited the'premises of Lee Bing. He found various utensils and saw Ah Wong in bod smoking, Th» Celestial denied that ho was smokin'--at the time, but said lie had smoked previously. Ah Wong was only a visitor and as a guest had been allowed to smoke. There was no evidence of regular smoking. Lee Bing was charged (.1) With being in possession of opium; (2) Being, the occupier of premises in Bangiuru Road did permit such premises to be used for the smoking of opium; (3) Was found in possession of pipes and other utensils for use iu connection with the smoking of opium. Mr. Atrnore on Bing's behalf, pleaded guilty. Ah Wong was charged with smoking prepared opium, and a plea of guilty was also put in. ■Hr. A (more stated that Lee Bing was a market-gardener and had been in Otaki for about six years and ha-1 never previously been before the Court. Ho was a hard-worker and there was no charge against him for smoking of opium. The other man was not a resident and as a guest had been allowed, to smoke.
