SQUAD OF SIX HITS SEVEN POSSIBLES

CAPT. NEILSON WINS A GRADE-

TItLVfHAM, Last Night, Competitors at the National Riflo association meeting at Trentham arc in accord that present shooting conditions, which are ideal, have not obtained for many years. Old marksmen refer to the range as "tricky Trentham'- hut of late years, it has improved, -due in some measure to the clearance of the bush off the lower hills.

The iiion are settling down to the more serious phase of shooting and interest js becoming keener. The atmospheric conditions changed appreciably during the course of th© day. A dull and almost windless morning effected visibility when shooting commenced in the opening ma ten. at the o'.n) yards range but an hour later, it was almost perfect. A varying wind, puffy at times and veering quickly from left to right, proved trying, but notwithstanding, some excellent cards were returned, possibles being numerous. Cadet Whiteman, of Upper Hutt lit years-'of age, registered the possible at 500 yar'd.s and there was an outstanding squad board, the score? on which are a record for Trentham. A squad composed of six men registered seven possibles over the three ranges, E. riaidane, Waipukurau, scored -p- :>ut of a possible 105; J. HuntC, Vet one, with 100, get :>0 at 500 yards; <l Richardson .100, W. Duncan, Timaru !><>, K. Breingan, Oisborne 88 and O. Watts, K-otorua 87. With the exception of Breingan all are B. grade men. The. scores would have been higher had not throe, shootists struck bad. patches and a pronounced milage. General Young G.0.C., was an interested visitor.

The A "'null. 1 opening match was won by Captain Neilson, Napier, with JO2, the winner at the previous meeting being. A. Powell of Akarana, with 10J. The B grade winner was E. Haldnne, Waipukurau, with JO2, being two points in advance of W. Johnston, Feathorst.on, last year's winner. G. Patchett won ihe tyro's grade with. .1.00. Last year, A. El gar, Hawer*i, v. itli OS, was successful. The Dominion match was completed, this evening, the winner being J. Blackburn, of Te Kuiti. who scored 11(3. Ho made 66 with lf> shots at 600 yards and the possible at 900 yards, with ten shots.

B. Holmes, Wanganui, with 116 was second. He made 72 at the shorter range. H. Hunt, Suburbs, was successful last year with 120. P. Goldfinch, Old Navals, 1.15, who was second, was again amongst the leaders, with 114.

The longer range found out the less experienced shots and a number of old ones went to pieces, misses being plentiful. The weather conditions were line.
