STABBING AFFRAY.
SHIP’S QUARTERMASTER
REMANDED.

Arnold Hinds, the coloured quartermaster of the steamer Bloemfontein, arrested in connection with the stabbing of Norman Maitland Childs, appeared at the Police Court to answer a charge of assault so as to do bodily harm. Detective Sergeant Nuttall asked for a remand till January 23 to call two witnesses from the steamer Maimoo. Mr Hanlon for accused was allowed to call evidence for the defence. Edwin Branch, quartermaster, stated that he saw no signs of a knife or blood about Hinds. William Robert Cherry, second officer, stated that he had investigated the disturbance on which Hinds reported,, visitors to the ship having-been causing trouble. Some of the Maimoa’s crew were on the wharf later and when somebody called out that a man had been stabbed he did not go down or allow any member of his crew to go because he thought it was a ruse to start a fight between the crews. He did not see Childs being put down the gangway by Hinds. A remand was granted.
