The New Zealand Times of January 3rd, 1878, said:—“The Wellington and Masterton railway was opened for public traffic on New Year’s Day as far as Kaitoke, eight miles beyond the Upper Hutt, and a considerable number of people availed themselves of the opportunity of going over the line. ’ ’
A quaint story from Dublin was related at the Methodist social in Levin last evening, by the Rev. E. Harknea.n It concerned a guide in a museum, who, pointing to a sw’ord, said it was the one with which Balaam killed his ass. The visitor corrected him by saying that Balaam only wished for a sword to slay the animal. “Ah, yes,” readily responded the guide, “that is the very sword he Wished for.”
Two very desirable prizes have been provided by Bros, de Maluianehe and A. W. Allen for the final euchre party of the season conducted by the Druids’ Lodge and which will take place at the Druids’ Hall this evening. A b|g attendance is expected. In connection with the Grand Carnival being held at Wellington from 24th November tc Bth December, inclusive, in aid of the War Memorial and National Art Gallery, the Railway; Department is granting the issue of holiday excursion faros to Wellijjgton (Thorndon or Lambton), and,-in addition, organised parties of school child ren will be granted school picnic excursion fares during the period of the Carnival. The great event in the children’s Sunday School year ii the anniversary. The children of the Methodist School have been well trained by Mb H. E. Keys and assisted by some senior singers and a good orchestra, a fine rendering of many beautiful choruses will be given on Sunday. The anniversary will be continrod on Tuesday, 27th November, when the prize distribution will take place. All the offerings next Sunday will be devoted to the children’s work.
It is interesting to recall political matters in the Wairarapa 50 years ago. The Rev. J. C. Andrews resigned his seat in 1877 to take an appointment at the Nelson College. Although it was announced that Messrs Barton", R. J. Duncan and C. Pharazyn intended to nominate for the vacant seat, Mr. George Beetham tvas returned unopposed. Mr. Bunny was then the second representative for the distrifet and Sir George Grey was Premier. 7
