KYEBURN MURDER.

TRIAL CONTINUED. \ (By Telegraph- -Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The preliminary trial of William John Hardie on a charge of murdering Jo Shum at Kyeburn Diggings on July 18th, was continued at the police court to-day. The police photographer produced photographs taken on the scene. He stated that he took a photograph oi a footmark pointed out by a detective, but the camera moved, causing a double image. Subsequently he took at Dunedin an imprint of Hardie s left boot. Both photographs were produced. Patrick McMahon stated he was on the job of the Masonic Hall at Naseby from April 26th to June 6th. Hardie had shown him photos, but be could nor say whether any were of the Dunedin Exhibition. Detective Lean stated that on July 18th he took, possession at Dunedin station of a sack swag addressed to Liar die. Witness had boai'ded the tiain at Wingatui to search for Hardie, who he did not see, but the next morning he. and. Detective Roycroft arrested Hardie iu Cumberland Street. Witness asked for. an interview ajud Hardie agreed to go to the police station, where, he, admitted that the swag was his property. Witness, told him a Chinese had been murdered and suspicion attached to him. Hardie laughed, ieplying that he would not any Chinaman and did not know any Chinese at Kyeburn. Witness-bvarned accused, who said, “I’m not afraid otanything I say. I had nothing to do with the Chihaman.’’ Accused agreed to make a statement which- he signed. Accused took from the swag the cloth es he was wearing on the day of the murder, and also handed over the boots he was wearing on July 17th, also a wallet'' containing four' £l, notes, six photographs including four-of the Exhibition, a : receipt for gold and memorandum of sale of gold on July 18Later accused was told that fehum s mate had left Kyeburn for Dunedin.
