'Vyith estimates placing the total Florida. dead at 800, with 1500 persons Blissing, reports of rioting; amongst the negroes indicate that a, vast problem is facing the relief workers. A'grave condition exists at Pahokee, where an epidemic of typhoid is already gaining ground. The Red Cross, in an effort to check the spread of the disease, is continuing to resort to whole- - sale burials of unidentified dead. An 1 eye-witness declared that- • kee was the worst-affected by the' storm, which raced- across Lake Okeechobee and-'swept the village and surrounding county. It is estimated that nearly every .building was demolished. Dead- bodies were discovered floating in the lakes and swamps nearby. Serum and chlorine are being rushed to . all the areas. Governor Martin, of Florida, has advised that aid .should be rushed by ' boat, owing to the uncertain condition of the railways. State has been seriously affected. Tropical birds were killed by thousands. The storm’s toll on the North Atlantic coast now totals four dead in the New York metropolitan district. Reports of marine collisions 'and wrecks continue, none of. which are regarded as serious.
