The judge, who is relatively youthful and inexperienced, was sen t to investigate the. death of a; youth found drowned in a lake after a quarrel with his brother at a wedding, Judge Stahlberg, impressed with the responsibility of the. task, arrested the entire wedding including the newly-mar-ried pair, the parents of the bride, the bridegroom's father and the dead man's fiancee, accusing them of doping the dead man and, throwing- him. info the lake. , .’The Burgomaster, Herr Neudarnm, feeling the judge ’» methods -were open to • criticism, i lodged a complaint just jn- timo,tas the ardent criminal investigator, scenting danger, ordered the arrest of /the. Burgdraasteri and Chief of Police on suspicion that they also were implicated in the conspiracy. The local police, however, refused, to execute the warrant, giving his superiors time to supersede Judge Stahlbcrg, who was ordered to tgke prolonged leave of absence to recuperate his health. VAIL-the accused were released, as it was preved the youth had committed suicide.
