TWO SMALL MISSION BOATS TO REPLACE OLD

SOUTHERN CROSS NOW TOO EXPENSIVE. AUCKLAND, Last Night. “After thirty years’ service,” states Bishop Steward, “the mission vessel Southern Cross will be replaced in 1961 by two smaller vessels ,one of 75 tons to be stationed in the Solomon group, and one of 35 tons to be stationed in the Now Hebrides. ”Thc Southern Cross is very expensive to maintain, and the change is being made in response to a demand for the curtailment of expenditure, though it will mean a very considerable inconvenience for missionaries and mission workers. , Supplies will have to be purchased in Australia and shipped by steamers trading regularly to the main islands. The new vessels will distribute supplies throughout the mission territory.”
