POLICE APPEAL TO PUBLIC.
HELP WANTED TO LAY ESSEX MURDERER. ~17)NI>ON, Oct. 3. Despite Scotland Yard's utmost concentration, the Essex murder investigation is likely to reach a dead end. The series of clues first obtained has proved unprofitable. The brutal nature of the crime—the shooting in a lonely lane of Police Constable Gutteridge—-has aroused public horror, as well as uneasiness that the perpetrators may go undetected. Two men were taken to Scotland Yard to-night for interrogation. The police are appealing for widespread public aid. The newspapers point out that the degree of skill reached by motor bandits requires the reorganisation of the police £prce, with provision for the most modern resources.
Mr Edgar Wallace, the well-known novelist and criminologist, writing in the "Morning Post," is of the opinion that the cartridges and revolver found at Hammersmith are not connected with the murder and that the police are on a cold scent, so it may be long before the criminals are caught. The Government, states Mr. Wallace, should offer a large reward and pardon for any member of the gang not actually concerned with the shooting-
