REMOVING THE MAGNETO

Some people, under the belief that it is nearly impossible to remove a magneto without being- instantly capable of putting" it back again in its proper place, never bother to take a look at'the relative positions of the high-tension distributer brush and the segments. They will remove the holdingdown band, take the magneto right off, and in the course of adjustment will rotate the armature; and, when replacing it, the connections will possibly be as much us a complete revolution out in the timing.

It may be true that the modern magneto is practically impossible to replace incorrectly, owing to the couplings being so made that a wrong assembling would be impossible; but, in tlie majority of cases, this is not true. Therefore, when you are taking off your magneto, just take a glimpse at the couplings and make a few pencil marks or something to that effect, so that the position of the distributer brush and the high-tension segments will not be confused. While the machine is apart from the engine it would be as well if you could refrain from rotating the hightension segments. In the process of refitting the armature shaft should be turned until the distributer is in exactly the same position as it was when the coupling was dismantled. Having done this, you need feel no apprehension as to whether the magneto will function or not.
