BOWLING AND CROQUET.

OPENING OP OTAK3 GREENS. The opening of the bowling and croquett season in Otaki took place on Wednesday in fine weather, and in the presence of quite a crowd, including a number of bowlers and croquet players from Levin and Manakau.

Mr. H. Freeman, President of the Otaki Club, in opening said that the Club was more fortunate than on the two previous occasions as regards weather, still there -was room for improvement. A welcome was accorded the visitors, while reference was made to the loss the club had sustaifred by the death of Mr. E. Whiteman, who had been a prominent member. A vote of condolence was.passed to the relatives, Mr. Freeman trusted that the visitors would have a good time, and also hoped that the season .throughout would be a successful one. A tribute was paid to the caretaker, who, Mr. Freeman remarked, had the green in line order. Mrs. Freeman then rolled the “jack” and followed by a splendid shot, amidst applause. Mr. Freeman also opened the croquet green, and in doing so said that he would like to see more members. He trusted the Clubs would have a prosperous season. Mrs. Freeman then hit the first ball amidst applause. Later in the day Mr. Gibson, vicepresident of the Levin Club, thanked the bowlers for providing a fine afternoon's play which all had appreciated. He felt that ail had the Kruschen feeling, and trusted the Daylight Saving would be beneficial. Mr. Gibson congratulated the club on its fine green, certainly it was not yet ideal, being too early in the season, but still it was very good. An apology was tendered for the absence of the President of the Levin Club, who was unavoidably absent. The Otaki Club, he said, had given all a cordial reception, and ha trusted that Otaki would pay a visit to the Levin Club's opening and spend a pleasant day. Ho hoped also that his Club would level up the games. (Cheers). Mr. Freeman 'assured (the /visitors that two rinks would be sent to Levin.

Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies and fully appreciated. During the day two games with the visitors were played, Otaki winning both, 45 —24.

Freeman, Milne, Olliver and Wyatt (s) won from Edwards, Clements, Hawke and Gibson (.s), 20 —11. Noble, Nieolson, Mill ward, and Satherley (s) defeated Sherwood, Durham, Percy and Suhan (s), 25 —13. In both games very creditable play was witnessed, and during the day there were several “touchers.”

ON THE CROQUET GREEN. Quite a large crowd assembled on the Municipal green for the opening, when the Mayor (Mr. Brandon) extended a very hearty welcome to all visitors, trusted that the afternoon would be a pleasant one, and the season a prosperous one. He apologised for the absence of Mrs. Simcox and Dr. Atmore, who were afterwards waited on and presented with choice bouquets. Mrs. Brandon, who also received a bouquet, hit the first ball, and her fine shot gained for her a deal of applause.

Competitions were won by Mrs. ~ryant (tunnelling and Monte Carlo), Mrs. Evans (Manakau) the French croquet, while Mrs. Herrick, after playing off with Mrs, Sharp, won the clock croquet. Airs. Kilmister (secretary) presented the prizes. Airs. Herrick, on behalf of the visitors, returned thanks for providing such, a pleasant afternoon's sport and wished all a very successful season. (Applause). Play followed -and a very pleasant day was spent. During the afternoon Air. and Airs. Kilmister were warmly thanked for their splendid work for the Club.

Result of the competitions:—Monte Carlo, Alias Herrick; hitting the peg, Airs. Boulton; golf croquet, Airs. Bowling. The Municipal Club has received an invitation to attend;the opening of the Northern Club's (Palmerston North) lawn on the 5 th.
