SPORTING NOTES.

APPRENTICE THE PREMIER HORSEMAN. The contest for the riding tumours of the Dominion for the 1926-7 season in which the Awapuni apprentice, T. W. Green, and the Auckland horseman, K. MeTavish, were the central figures, was brought to a close on Saturday when the former lad emerged with an advantage of two and a half points over his nearest opponent. By that success Green has attained the honour of having created a new record thereby, apart from the fact that it is the first time in the history of the Dorn in ion that an apprentice has headed froth lists, he has attained that position in his second year .of filling a saddle. At one stage Green had established a commanding lead, but then came a bombshell when he was stood down for a. month, which was followed by a, period of incapacity brought about fry his suffering a broken collar-bone when Askari fell with him when following the hounds with the Manawatu Hunt. Added to the fact that Green was across the Tasman for a further period in the spring, it can safely to said that he lost in all about five months of the season which mates his record all the more remarkable. While it was evident that the new champion rider possessed the ability of a practised rider practically from the time of his entering upon his career, no little credit for the success must be awarded the mentor to whom Green is attached, for E, E. Hatch, who was himself one of the Dominion's foremost norsemen in the hey day of his riding career, has expended no small araouht of time in coaching Green along the right lines. There is at the present sheltering under the charge of Hatch another budding horseman, who also shows a fund of promise and more may well be heard of him either this or next season and it wdll be indeed surprising if Awapuni does not furnish another champion at no great distant date.
