GREASERS SENT TO GAOL

A month’s hard labour was indicted ‘ - on eight greasers belonging to the Commonwealth liner, Jervis Bay, at the West Ham Court for disobeying orders. , 3 Captain Chaplin said the greasers walked from the engine room to their quarters via the promenade deck, inconveniencing the passengers. He forbade the practice soon after their departure from "Svdney, and the men’s union supported the order, but the local secretary persuaded them to defy it. The men pleaded that they used the promenade deck to avoid a sudden - change in temperature. The ship’s doctor expressed the opinion that the alternative route did not . entail special risks;
