A WHISPERED CHARGE.
NAVAL OFFICER’S SERI OPS LAPSE. ALLEGED BETRAYAL OF SUBMARINE SECRETS. <(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright.) Received this day, 9.10 a.m.' LONDON, March 17. Lieut.-Commander Mayers, recently holding an important post in the submaripe service at Portsmouth, was charged at Bow Street at the instance' of the Admiralty,* under the Official Sc■crets Act. The Court was crowded with notable personages. Mayors was remanded for a week, bail being refused. 1 He resigned an official position to take up an appointment in the submarine department of Vickers, Limited, The prosecution said Mayers was changed with being in possession of plans relating to submarines. The case was -extremely serious. : A detective addressed the Magistrate in whispers and the spectators were unable to gather the nature of the charge.
