A Maori debtor, who has a family of ten, and who was summoned for failing to pay a debt of £lO 7s Id for which judgment was given in February last, stated in the Levin Court yesterday that he was already paying £3 a month on two other orders of the court. He was interested in a property of 50 acres which was subdivided among a family of eight and mortgaged to the Public Trustee, and he was allowed 4 an ae to jive on. The balance of the property was let for 30s an acre, but the rent was paid to the Public Trustee. The debtor worked on the County metal-crusher when work was available. The Magistrate told him he was not entitled to have a large family and feed them at other people's expense. An order was made for payment of the debt at the rate of £1 a month.

Statistics of recent years have shown that the Maori race is on the increase, and it would appear from statements made in the Magistrate’s Court at Levin. by certain Native judgment debtors, that its population is going ahead by leaps and bounds. One of the defendants informed the court that he was the father of ten children, of whom eldest was 17; all but one of the children lived at home with him, on property of half an acre.
