MILLIONS FOR SOLDIER SETTLERS
AUSTRALIA CUTS HER LOSSES. Received this flay, 10.10 a.m. r MELBOURNE, July 18. -Mr Bruce, in a letter to the State Premiers concerning the position of soldier settlements, says the Commonwealth Government, after a careful review of the position, expressed the opinion that the proper course to pursue was to write off five millions sterling of the loans'made by the Commonwealth to the States for soldier settlement. This would bring the CommonweaJh’s share of the losses to over ten millions. In all nearly 36,000 soldiers have been settled on the land at a total cost of over fiftythree millions. In many cases difficulties faced these settlers, but there was sound reason for the belief that, under this huge scheme substantial benefits would ultimately accrue both to the soldiers and Australia.
