LEVIN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

$ MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monlhlv meeting of the Levin District High "' School Committee was held last night. Present: The Rev, Mr McArthur (chair), and Messrs Adams, Roe, Lankshear, Foster, Malcolm, Bishop, Kerslake and the headmaster. An. invitation from the Levin Fire Brigade to their annual re-union was accepted with thanks. ■ It was reported that the Board had passed regulations putting the control of cookery and woodwork rooms in the hands of the teachers in charge.—As this was. held to he an infringement of the' committee’s rights under the Board’s by-laws as well as interfering with the organisation of the school, it was decided to ask the Board to alter this decision. Quotations were forwarded by an Ohakune Arm for firewood, hut It was decided to purchase requirements locally. An invitation was received from the Y.M.C.A. to appoint a representative on the “Father and Son” Banquet Committee. Mrs RiQbbie wrote acknowledging the Committee’s vote of appreciation, of her services upon her retirement from teaching. Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., forwarded circulars relating to his Religious Instruction in Schools Bill. The Education Board wrote stating that the enquiry the Committee had held into allegations of carelessness in driving one of the school motor conveyances, should serve the purpose of impressing on, drivers the necessity of unceasing vigilance. Mr C. I. Harkness wrote advising that the Board had now agreed to the committee’s request that alternative tenders be called for its suggested addition of an infant room at the school. Similar advice was received from the Education Board, which also stated that, “since the matter was first dealt with the proposal for the establishment of k high school has been very considerably advanced through the recommendation of the Council of Education that a High School should be established at Levin, but the Education Department, since the Board meeting, has called atention to this fact, and has pointed out that through the establishment of a High School there will be several vacant rooms in the main school. It is also suggested that a Junior High School be established and this ifcarried out would leave still more vacant rooms.” In the circumstances It had been suggested that temporary requirements could be met by the erection of a portable room, which could be removed when the need passes. It was decided to thank the Board tor its action and to ask to be advised as to the difference in the cost of the two designs as soon as possible. , M was reported that the credit balance as a result of the last picture benefit was £l3 6s, and there was a further credit of £8 10s from the “Esther” cantata. Both these sums had been placed to the credit of the Grounds Improvement Fund. It was decided to forward a letter of thunks to Messrs Scott and Sullivan, proprietors of the People’s Pictures for their continued generosity in the matter of picture benefits. Members spoke in appreciation of the kindness of the Shannon Choral Society in producing the “Esther" cantata in Levin, and on the motion of Messrs Roe and Bishop, it was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mr Howard Andrew and the Shannon Society, it being stated that, apart from the worthy object in view, the general opinion was tliait the audience got a very good shilling’s worth of music on the occasion of the Society’s visit. On Mr Foster’s motion, Messrs Procter, Lankshear and the mover were appointed a Grounds committee to submit a plan of improvement to the Committee. / , . . ■ The Headmaster reported that the corridor ventilating windows had not been provided with opening and closing tackle. Two extra fire extin-, guishers had been received from the Board, ’making three altogether. Several teachers had been absent on account of sickness. •
