A telegram from Philadelphia crusader, disclosed a beer smuggling plot, showing that bootleggers enlisting the aid of a number of pollcenpLen, used .General Butler’s official motor to effect the removal of socalled “high powered" beer from a brewery. General Butler’s bright red vehicle, wearing the municipal seal, had been regularly kept in a garage near the brewery, from whence issued ffve giant motor trucks, laden with beer. These proceeded down the main thoroughfare, ostensibly convoyed by Butler’s automobile, wherein * sat a figure dressed to resemble the General, The trucks were escorted to th outskirts of the town, and the policemen then returned to the city_ The plot was discovered through confessions, following the apprehension of two trucks'on a suburban highway.
