LEVIN POULTRY SHOW.

PRIZE-WINNERS FROM ALL PARTS ■ Of DOMINION. LAST CHANCE OF INSPECTION TO-NIGHT. 'The' second annual show of the Levin Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Birds Society wag officially opened in the Drill Hall yesterday afternoon hy Mr W,. N. Anderson, president of the Society. There was a good attendance of the public which continued throughout the day and evening, the keenest interest being taken in the exhibits.

Five hundred and thirty-three entries had been received, and were displayed to admirable advantage in the roomy Drill'Hall. As was to be expected thb utility classes were very well represented, 64 Orpingtons, and nearly 100 Leghorns being of this class. The judge of the utility class, Mr S. Johnstone, of Palmerston North, was very • complimentary about the birds displayed, both in the Orpington and Leghorn sections. The winning White Leghorn hen, owned by Mr W. N. Anderson, of Levin, he characterised as being of perfect type, and equal to competition in any part of New Zealand. He was ai&o particularly struck with the fine display of cockerels.

The Minorcas, which were represented by 18 birds were not taken as a class of such high quality ,as the Orpingtons and Leghorns, and were inclined to lack type and size. This referred particularly to cocks. The winning hen, shown by Mi’s G. C. Thornton, of Hastings, was full of quality. The Silver Wyandottes. from a fanciers’ point of view, were lacking in colour.

Mr H. Bower, of Levin, judged the fancy Orpingtons.

The fancy classes, although not su strong numerically as the Utility, were described by the judge, Mr W. Hall, of Lepperton, as being .very creditable ior such a new show, whilst the quality was particularly good. Some oi the b(est birds, however, had been spoiled ior show purposes by having their wings clipped, presumably to prevent them flying out of pens. This, Mr Hall said, ivas not allowed, am: was sufficient to disqualily them, as although here done merely to prevent birds dying, might conceivably be for the purpose of removing feathers oi unsatisfactory colour. The same classes are well idled and of good quality, whilst the Black Minorcas, Brown, American White, and Bud Leghorns, are all of lair quality, Caimpines are well represented anil of very high standard. The Rhode Island Red ctasse are not so Avell filled as they might have been, but the quality and type are excellent.

In connection with the ladies’ classes, Mr Hall pointed out that some rearrangement might advantageously he made in future shows. In this class lor which there were 21 entries, were shown the finest birds in the Rhode Island Red and Plymouth Rock classes, each of which got prizes as .being the best birds of their class in the show. He suggested that it would be better that they should he shown ha their own, classes and judged again in relation to the ladies’ classes. Sixty pigeons are shown, amongst which Homers are represented with 40 entries, making a very line display of this class, and giving the judge, Mr Stott, of Gisborne, no eaisy task. Some very’ fine magpie pigeons were also shown by Mr P. G. Burlace, of Gisborne. In 'the evening a smoke concert, presided over by Mr D. W. Matheson, was tendered to exhibitors and menu hers, and an account of this will appear in l a 1 aier is&ue. The show is open during the afternoon and evening. All those intere-sled In poultry should takG the opportune' Of paying it. a visit before it closes tonight. the. judges.
